Paul & Joe Clair de Lune: Paper Moon

by | Oct 7, 2010

Paul & Joe’s Clair de Lune face and eye colours have been sat on my desk for exactly two months now. The reason? When I first played about with them, I found the colours to be really sheer – to the point that they wouldn’t show up on film. Being the busy (and impatient) old bee that I am, I huffed at the cute little matchboxes of powder and pushed them to one side. There was no way that I was going to recommend something that was wishy-washy and pointless, even if they were in the cutest, most stylish matchboxes that I had ever seen!

Oh dear – how wrong was I? My impatience on this occasion was truly a bad thing because yesterday, feeling terrible that they were still sat there redundant, I decided to give them another go – and they were beautiful. As sheer as I had first thought, but when layered and built upon and layered again, truly gorgeous and flattering shades. I’m literally kicking myself at not having spent more time experimenting with these in the first place – they would have been perfect for late summer evenings – but they also feel incredibly festive, with the shimmering flecks shot through each of the shades.

My favourite set of shades is ‘Paper Moon’ – not just for the incredible swan packaging, but for the earthy, easily-to-blend shades. If you take a peek at the video below, you can see each shade as I layer it onto my eyes. I’ve created a very sheer, pretty eye but you could intensify the look by continuing to build colour. You can also wet the brush slightly to create a denser effect.

If you’re looking for eye colour that has instant impact, that makes a huge statement, then the Clair de Lune palettes aren’t for you. If you’re looking to create beautiful washes of colour flecked with shimmer – well, these are pretty much perfect. I’m not sure about the ‘face’ part – aside from using the palest colour as a highlighter, I can’t really see how you would sweep a face brush over such a small area of powder. But the gold in the Paper Moon is pretty brushed onto cheekbones and underneath the brows.

Paper Moon, Silver Moon and Blue Moon, £18.50 each from ASOS or HQ Hair.
