Giveaway: The Great Big Hair No-verhaul

Why is it that at the start of every new year I want a brand new hair style? A totally new cut, a completely new colour – something dramatically different. I look at my hair, the hair that has been perfectly serviceable for an entire twelve months, and – for reasons that are a mystery to me – decide that something radical has to be done. That I must emerge from the hair salon looking like a completely new person. For the rest of the year I am happy with general maintenance – having my roots touched up and a little trim to keep things neat and relevant – but in January I seem to long for change.

(Actually, I had the same sort of sudden craving for an extreme hair reform after both babies were born and, weirdly, after my Dad died last year. But that’s a whole other story.)

It’s a new year thing isn’t it? A fresh start, a clean slate, the chance to reinvent and cast off the old. I think I did have a touch of the New Year New Me lurgy when I started deliberating over my hair, early last week, but I also think that because I was making a dedicated journey to London to have a cut and colour, I felt as though I needed to make it count. To come out with something strikingly different and life-changingly new.

But it soon became apparent that a radical hair transformation was not on the menu for me at the Josh Wood Atelier. Thank God that Melanie (my colourist) and Kat (my stylist) are both very sensible and very experienced; they listened to what I wanted (hair that I didn’t have to style, roots that weren’t obvious when they started to show through) and vetoed any sort of dramatic overhaul.

In fact, what Melanie and Kat suggested I have done was the opposite of an overhaul – it’s what we’ve now decided to call a “no-verhaul”. Because you don’t always need to have something extreme done when you’re sick of your usual style – sometimes the slightest tweaks, if they’re clever ones, help you to fall in love with your hair all over again.

“It’s all about seasonal changes,” said Melanie when she was describing how she would adjust my colour. “You don’t always have to have a major life-changing colour – the new year temptation to be a new you might be fine for a week or two but think about it; is it going to be high maintenance?”

Kat was also a fan of the minor adjustment. “I’m just going to nibble the ends,” she said, which made me laugh because I envisaged her sitting on  her stool, biting at my hair like a mouse. Apparently the secret to growing out your hair is to use plenty of intensive hair masks – keep the condition in fine form and you don’t need to cut off huge chunks of it every time you have a trim. (There’ll be a glut of hair mask reviews, then, for the next few months!)

So yes; my hair overhaul became a hair no-verhaul. But despite the changes being so diminutive, the overall effect was quite uplifting – and I didn’t have the settling-in period of an unfamiliar cut or a high maintenance colour.

Before…

… and after:

I suppose you could say that a no-verhaul is in fact the same thing as a routine hair maintenance visit but I’m not sure that it is; a no-verhaul (© A Model Recommends, 2019!) is a conscious decision to persevere with and improve upon what you already have, rather than trying to execute some sort of Oscar-winning personality-transplant manoeuvre. It’s when (I can legitimately decide on the definition of this, as the creator of – what will become in the future, I’m sure – a much-used, scholar-approved term) you have the intention of dramatically changing something but decide that less is more.

Now the very kind people at Josh Wood Atelier have offered one UK reader a complete Hair No-verhaul at the Holland Park salon including a cut with Kat, a colour with Melanie and a delicious lunch whilst it’s all going on. (The food at Josh Wood is amazing.)

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning this incredible prize is leave a comment below before noon on Friday 18th January (if you’re reading via email you need to click through to the blog to be able to comment) and make sure that your email is in the form so that I can contact the winner. The lucky winner, chosen at random, will also get a personalised haircare regime to take home with them.

Please see here for the full T&Cs – and if you’re struggling to think of something to say in your comment then you can always copy and paste the below…

“Oh Ruth, oh wise one, you are so amazing and brilliant and your hair looks fabulous today – and what a smashing blouse you have on.”

Getting back to my hair, though; I couldn’t be more pleased with the results of my no-verhaul. Kat squared off the shape of my hair at the back to make the line more blunt and modern and added the tiniest bit more shape around the front. Mel added lowlights as close to my natural shade as possible and gave more of a balayage effect to move things away from the more generic look that a full head of highlights gives. She did some “sporadic foil placement” with blonde to keep things bright around the face, and something called a “dropped root”, which is when you take the darkness at the root down further into the hair so that regrowth isn’t visible.

Exactly what I want at the moment: low-maintenance hair that doesn’t need styling. Actually, the no-styling thing is precisely why I think I’m going to carry on growing it. I love shorter hair and I do admit that it possibly suits me better, but only when I style it. And there’s the rub, because I never style it. I’d say that I style it one tenth of the time, maybe even less. Really I just style it when I know I’m having my photo taken or I’m going on film – the rest of my days are spent with mid-length hair scraped back into a bun. At least if it’s longer it sort of forms its own style, with waves and kinks and what have you.

But watch this space – come June I’m sure I’ll be procrastinating about getting a blunt fringe cut in to “pep things up a bit” or toying with the idea of a jet black elfin crop.

  11. I am almost 43. My hair has always been pants and now the rest of me is rapidly falling victim to age-related decrepitude. If nothing else, a good hairdo would compensate in some way and I might look nice in at least one photo before I pop my clogs.

  12. Oh Ruth, oh wise, funny, kind, gorgeous and clever one! What an incredibly generous giveaway from you and the Josh Wood team! It’s impeccable timing for me.. Basically, I’ve been battling with terrible illness for years (during which your blog has always been a breath of fresh air), January is my birthday month (so I need a treat!), I’ve never ever dyed my wash and go, big curly hair in my life, (it’s naturally a mix of brown, ginger and blonde), I’ve only been trimming my hair once a year and desperately need a proper shape and style, I’ve obsessed about trying one of the JW home dye kits at home (since my once barely noticeable grey hairs have recently exploded, probably due to illness and age! But wouldn’t know where to start – I need the JW team to work their magic!), and I promised myself 2019 would be a better year with a better me so.. THE GREAT BIG (CURLY) HAIR NO-VERHAUL (genius term btw) would make my year, (decade even!), and be a dream come true! Thank you for the inspiration. And as much as I hope it’s me.. congrats to whoever wins this awesome prize. Xxx

I like her ten years ago too. The me of right now would absolutely love to have her hair done at a posh salon and we waited on hand and foot. That would be very special indeed.

  128. Hi, I’m always reading your blog it’s been one of my faves for a long time. You’re a very down to earth and relatable person, which is nice in this day and age. I would love to win this hair makeover as after a very life threatening ectopic pregnancy last year, it was on my ovary and not spotted for a while I ended up having to have some rounds of chemo to save my life. Unfortunately it ment I lost a little of my hair, but a year later it’s got a lot better but I haven’t been to hair dressers in a while as I’m a little scared. I already feel lucky just to have my life and my supportive husband but to win this would be lovely. Thank you

  132. Urghhh I’m in such a hair rut right now. I’m about to turn the big 30 this year and whilst I’ve always been blessed with relatively health hair, I’ve now been invaded by sprouts little hairs that look like crazy, thick cat hairs (like Mr Bear has deposited a spattering of floofs into my very dark locks!). Every time I look in the mirror at my work place there’s another rascally grey friend poking haphazardly out of my head! Why has no one told me?!?

I’m torn between cutting it all off and deciding if I’m too old to have 22 inch hair? Shall I just start getting a blue rinse and a weekly set? Am I now set to match my 9pm bedtime with a crown of curls and greys? Who knows!

  161. Being a Gemini I have a compulsive desire to flip and flop and change my hair at whim constantly. I’m currently mid-cycle of my typical hair life story which is essentially: grow hair extremely long in endeavour to have it all the same length like the girl in Love Story, get bored and cut a fringe. Hate fringe, grow it out, get bored of growing it out and cut hair to a bob, hate bob, attempt to grow hair out to all the same length, hair gets extremely long (etc ad infinitum). So essentially I could use the emotional support of a haircare professional at this stage.

I would sooooo love to win a Hair No-verhaul with Josh Wood, and here is my reason; I have a 20 month old boy called Woody and a brother in law called Josh and a British Shorthair (named Pumpkin, but the point is she is Bear’s BIGGEST fan). Your hair is perfect AND they do Sarah Harris’ hair, right? I need help embracing the greys!

Haven’t had my hair done in over 3 years (pre-babbo), so I have gone from close to platinum to mousey-brown constantly-in-pony-tail-as-too-long due to fading/root regrowth and am desperate for an overhaul. Tempted to go bright again, and chopping a load off, but holding back a bit…maybe balayage…then cut…hmmmm…

AS someone who works in the public everyday and can be on camera etc unexpectedly, my hair is the one thing that lets me down the most which is always a bit gutting. I just can’t make it ‘me’ and I want it to look as good when I style it as when I walk out of the salon! Your hair always looks fabulous and you can see how happy it made you to get that refresh!

  337. Hi Ruth! What a great giveaway. I’m celebrating my 40th birthday this year. At the moment I have blonde highlights all over my head (a bit too blonde I’m thinking) and lots of grey coming through and roots about 3 inches long (attractive I know!). I’m trying to grow the blonde out as my lovely hairdresser (bless her she really is adorable and a great cutter) reallly doesn’t know how to get that lovely balayage??? effect that you have going on. I’m so worried my hair is going to look a right pigs ear for my 40th and apparently my sister is taking me to the Langham (far too posh for this northerner) but we really don’t know where to go with it as my hair likes to try and turn red when I have it died (heaven knows why as it is as cool coloured as it can be!) The slightly darker at the roots and all multicoloured like yours is exactly what I’m aiming for but no idea on how to get there. Help!

  338. I love your new (old) look Ruth. My ‘do could do with a bit of attention too so please count me in for the draw.

Ps. I thought my hairdresser was the only one who said ‘nibble’. Cracks me up every time!

  339. I would LOVE this! My hair just always seems to hang so flat and the colour always leans yellow after the first wash (no idea why it does that!) so I’d love to find a way to remedy this. If I don’t win, please try to convince Josh that these big London brands need to set up in other cities across the country!

  340. I have fine hair which has been bleached forever. Currently, because don’t know how to move forward (coming up to 60) ash grey under the blonde, have not been back to hairdressers forever so hair now lacking shape possibly too long and quarter grey with lots of broken short strands so frizz on the grey section. Want something age appropriate but not too bright which cheap blonde colour seems to give you and low maintenance as I would not be able to afford lots of visits at any salon. Popped in to a few hairdressers but have not felt confident with their suggestions. Would really be a dream to go to such a salon and get a template which could be followed locally, Thank you for the chance to win. For now I remain in a hair-nowhere place.

There I said it. Yes Winnie the spaniel gets a 2.5 hour pampering session every 6-8 weeks to keep her looking lovely.
I on the other hand whack a home colour on every 4 weeks and pop to a hairdresser 3 times a year for a quick trim

    Why!?!?!?!

I have overhauled my make up and skincare routine over the last 2 years with amazing results thanks mostly to you

Ultimately I want to grow my hair out so I know that the second option is better (thanks 2017 me for lopping most of my hair off) but that doesn’t shop me from pinning every single idea to a board on Pinterest! I’m using a hair mask from Amika at the moment which is working wonders, but I can tell my year will also be filled with experimental treatment masks! Your hair looks lush though, super healthy and natural :) x

  411. Hi Ruth,

What an amazing thing you are offering!
To be honest I have wanted a cut with Kat for a while now, I think she also does Lily Pebbles. Not that I had a lot of money anyway but now after 8 years of suffering since nearly dying in labour, I have had to give up my job as I was so stressed out, I haven’t had my hair coloured for over 6 months, it’s not looking great and a new cut and colour would really give me the lift I need to start looking for a new job and start feeling like myself again, so if you could consider me, I would be most grateful. I have been an avid follower of your blog for many many years, you are the person who got me into the blogging world, an email from you makes me feel happy, which is exactly what I need right now. We all think your amazing! And the hair looks fab! Xx

I had my over processed hair cut so I can start to grow my hair long again(after having a shoulder length bob for a year). However the hairdresser didn’t give it any shape so I look like someones put a kitchen bowl on my head & cut round it. I have very fine copper hair that fades in the summer so i often get tempted to dye it darker to keep up its shine and vibrancy. I don’t want to change my hair as such I just want to feel more me again & less like a teenage boy

  531. Ruddy ‘eck Ruth. I do so need the team to take my hair and give it a good shake. I’m dark and about 50% grey and mid-forties. I need a style to minimise regrowth as I’m not yet ready to embrace full on grey – although I did see a woman today with stunning silver hair and I was very envious.

Your hair looks great and the No-verhaul suits you.

  555. Desperate times.

I had an all over bleach on my naturally mousey brown hair around 2 years ago, got pregnant and havent been able to afford to get to the salon anymore.

My hair now has extremely dark (greasy looking) 20cm roots with brassy blonde straggly ends.

I need a style from a hairdressing magician to allow me to grow out the bleach, embrace my natural colour and for it to look nice.
At the moment I look like i dont give a **** what I look like.

This would be a God send
I would really like to win this prize
And get to eat lunch, undisturbed.

  556. This “I want a big change” came to me last year which, funnily enough, meant that I started to let it grow. So basically a low-budget constant change, if you will. A year later, still in the “I don’t know what I want to do with my hair” state, the no-verhaul sounds exactly the kind of thing I need in my life. My hair’s life.

I’m nearly there, so why am I looking at pics of micro fringes and inverted bobs (or do I mean A-line bobs, are they the same?) Why i think a micro fringe will suit me, lord only knows. No elfin features here, just tired, 55 year old saggy eyes and a cowlick. Arrgghhh!!!

  586. Oh bugger. I just cut my long hair into a long bob and am not entirely sure about it. This post is about two weeks too late… It was the result of the post baby “I look like shit and my hair is falling out” fear, and my beloved fringe had to grow out three years ago due to the first bout of post partum hair loss. So maybe a no-verhaul is what I need to get used to this new look!

  598. Oh I dream of a pampering. I remember those days of spending three hours in a hair salon enjoying a cup of tea… now days I don’t seem to have three hours to ever sit in a chair…. (HOWEVER on another note I am absolutely outstanded at how much I can achieve in three hours without a small human hanging off of me. Hoover, mop, tidy the house, two loads of washing, prepare a meal, clean the bathrooms… that’s tonight’s achievements just since bedtime!)

A 13 month old here. A husband who is away from home until December and to top it all off I have just had a surprise that baby number two is on its way. I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to get out the house when baby number two arrives, so a no fuss no style haircut is exactly what I need…. (or a wig)

I have been growing my hair for the past 3/4 years, and first grew out all of my damaged bleach, and now have all virgin hair (for the first time in years!). My hair now reaches the middle of my back and is in the best condition it has been in years – I’m so proud of myself! Now I’m looking to inject a little light back into my hair/face – I am a dark ash blonde, and although I love the colour I need a slight boost. I have my fingers crossed!

  670. Love it! And Josh Wood products – the shampoo and conditioner are the only ones I use now along with the colour. I would love to see what someone else would suggest for me!

  675. I would love a no-verhaul on my hair. I have curly hair and going to the hairdressers can be such a pain because of this. Would be amazing to see what could be done with it in the hands(scissors) of the professionals!

  678. I literally just wondering whether I’d missed the exciting offer you hinted at, when as if by the power of my thoughts, this popped up. Clearly I have superpowers I wasn’t aware of. I would adore a no-verhaul as lovely as yours, from the wonderful team at Josh Wood, and it would be just in time for my 50th birthday. (How the hell did that happen?)

  687. Hey, Great hair ‍♀️
I keep deliberating what to do with my very rapidly greying, brown hair. My thought is to go lighter, yet last time I went to the hairdressers I somehow ended up agreeing to a darker colour with caramel highlights – nevermind! However, if I were to win a no-verhaul that would be amazing! Xx

  688. Ruth is an inspirational role model and brand ambassador. Although I have teens not tots! My hair has never been dyed and doesn’t have much attention – it would really be a great indulgence to be treated to a hair make-over….PLEASE x

  690. I really love Josh Wood products – the radiant shine hair oil smells divine! It would be a dream to visit the salon and be utterly renewed. Had a rubbish few months after breaking my shoulder and being stuck at home. First day back at work today – so ready to rejoin the human race and look less like a demented hermit!

  691. I haven’t done anything (and I mean ANYTHING) to my hair in a good two years after a disastrous spate experimenting with platinum blonde and purple dye, before turning the whole thing a dark brown and forgetting it ever happened. It’s turned into a light-brown-fading-into-blonde now, and while I like it ~enough~, the sound of a no-verhaul sounds amazing. Just a little something-something to fall back in love with hair that is just kind of ‘there’ right now. On my head. Not doing very much. The rejujed blonde in yours looks so good, and gives that fresh January vibe without really being too drastic. It’s so beautiful.
