[I’m a bit late with my travel reviews – I wanted to post them up in August – but this place is fully booked for the year anyhow, so no harm done! This is a great one to bookmark for next year if you’re planning a luxury trip! Book Here: MR & MRS SMITH]
Aenaon Villas is a group of seven villas, all attached but cleverly set on different levels so that each feels totally detached. There’s no restaurant but a full, incredible breakfast is served to you at your villa and if you feel peckish or thirsty throughout the day, refreshments can be provided. Fresh fruit platters, penne with cherry tomato sauce, Greek salads, iced coffee… There’s a very homely feel about the service – nothing is too much trouble, but only if you ask. There’s no overbearing “yessir, nossir” person following you around, but the resident holiday hero, Dennis, seems to instinctively know when you might need something! Villas are luxurious and fully-equipped – beautifully designed to the highest standard – and there’s WiFi, brilliant air-con and Korres goodies in the bathroom. (Not that I’m obsessed with beauty products.)
Where: On the highest and narrowest part of Santorini – you can watch the sun rise and set from the terraces and you have an uninterrupted view of the Caldera.
When: I went in late July – it was hot, so you could easily get away with May or early October and still be out sunbathing. Great for a late holiday – flights are direct so you could even do a long weekend!
How: I flew with Thomas Cook, it was £366 for two flights with extra luggage both ways and extra legroom seats. (So much legroom that I managed to sleep the whole way there!) Local taxi transfer is around €20.
Who: Mr AMR accompanied me, of course. How do you think I got these lovely photos?! This is the ideal place for a couple – remote, private, peaceful and with a view to die for. There’s a no children policy – firstly because it’s a romantic and quiet place and secondly because it’s set on very, very steep cliffs. Leave the kids with the in-laws and settle in for a week of bliss!
Why: Because you’ll be hard pushed to get a self-contained villa on Santorini that meets these standards, has such a stunning pool and location and has the benefit of being serviced. Villas are cleaned daily and breakfast is served at your own table in the privacy of your villa (or outside it, if you prefer). Take a little look at my video, below – I’ve tried to do a 360° view of everything for you because that’s the kind of thing I’d love if I was about to book a luxury break!
The Damage: We’re talking luxury here – I expect many people book for honeymoons, anniversaries, important birthdays…Villa Marily (three bedrooms, two bathrooms) was €750 per night peak season, but one bedroom villas start at €209 which is a lot friendlier on the wallet. The villa at the very top of the cliffs is the most private one, but all have their own little quirks and features. To read more about Aenaon or to see availability, you can go to
