Friends, Fanjitas and a Fear of Over-Talking

What I’d give for a transcript of Lily Pebble’s and Anna Newton’s latest At Home With podcast. They came to my house in Somerset along with (my wife from a different life) Caroline Hirons and things got slightly out of hand. Not only did I somehow invent the term “smoky bullshit” whilst talking about Instagram, we managed to steer the talk around to gynaecological issues and the practicalities of having sex in the bath.

I write that as though I’m surprised, but none of this is a surprise to me. Every time the four of us get together we end up hurtling down a one-way conversational track to hell, turning the air blue and venting until we feel as though we’ve had a near-religious soul-cleansing experience.

And I always feel slightly uneasy after I’ve had my voice recorded. When it’s actually happening, when I’m “in the moment”, everything I say feels real and raw and completely right to me. But then the microphone clicks off and the equipment gets packed up and I start to get the cold sweats. Why did I say that thing about the woman next door? She’ll know immediately I was talking about her! Why did I swear? Why do I have to overshare about bodily functions?

It’s a problem, this over-sharing, over-talking thing. I haven’t always been that way – I think it started when I had Angelica and didn’t get out of the house much. I discovered that when I was suddenly in the company of other adults I just couldn’t stop my mouth from saying things. And it hasn’t improved with time, to be quite honest. I don’t know whether it’s a sort of nervous condition but it’s especially bad when I get introduced to other mums – it’s as though I need a social skills refresher course! Does anyone else have this issue?

Anyway, if you fancy listening to my house-choosing methods (don’t go for a haunted one, number one tip) and would like to hear me chat about mumming, blogging and the world of social media then click the link below. If you want to hear Caroline Hirons talk straightforward sense about skincare, family life and where she sees the online world going then also click the link below. If you want to hear all of us talk about selfie angles, self-cleaning ovens and going into space then – you’ve guessed it! – click the link below.

If none of those things float your boat then you are clearly dead inside.

“At Home With” Podcast: Caroline Hirons & Ruth Crilly

There are many more episodes of At Home With; we recorded the very last of the second season, so do click back and listen to the others. I still have some catching up to do, but guests include editor Jo Elvin, Youtuber Patricia Bright and Clemmie Hooper, aka Mother of Daughters.

If you missed my shout-outs for the other podcasts I’ve done recently then here are the links again – add them to your playlist and enjoy my dulcet tones on your next commute:

      • I don’t blame you, that house was the start of Amityville!

  3. You and Caroline are magic together. Get an act together and take it on the road – people would flock to see you both together. The public is starved for smart, powerful, beautiful women who don’t talk about men.

  6. YES ! I think it is because of the not getting out of the house much, which is where it started for you ;-). I work mostly from home and am sat there on my own all the time. The only conversation I have is with my two children. So I tend to way overshare with people when I do get the chance to speak to other adults. I also seem to be speaking really quickly as well, as if I want to put as much information in as possible within a short period of time.

  7. I’m so guilty of over sharing particularly with people I’ve just met. I’m a very open person, can’t cultivate any mystique to save my life. Often after the fact I’m cringing with embarrassment with what I’ve told people Really looking forward to listening to this podcast, it’s been far too long since you and Caroline have got together (and with the added bonus of Lily and Anna ) xx

  8. I do the same thing quite often, and just like you I worry about having sounded like an insecure, babbling idiot… but I’ve never thought of you as anything other than charming and friendly. And that includes the podcast, which I’m listening to now. Thank you for this blog post, your honesty and willingness to be vulnerable matters to me. I wish I had your courage to admit to my self-consciousness.

  10. Listened to this podcast last night and it was brilliant, real and funny as hell! I do tend to over-share and babble about nonsense when I get social anxiety. Have had several face palm moments.

I’ve personally never been shocked or revolted by anything you say in your videos and podcasts or in your written form. In all the years that I’ve followed you, I never got the impression that you stray too far from who you are. You’re authenticity is relatable.

  11. Yes, absolutely to talking non stop when finally having a conversation with people you’re not related/married to. It definitely comes from having small people and being home all day.

  12. I haven´t listened to this episode yet, I was saving it for the weekend. My way of getting adult talk in with two little ones to talk to – I just listen to podcasts…

  13. I absolutely LOVED this podcast it was fantastic…I laughed all the way through it. Love all four of you; my favourite bloggers (not sure what other term to use, sorry). And yes to the babbling complete rubbish to people I’m introduced to or meet…I think it’s a nervous thing and the fact that I have two boys (9 & 7) and need to just get out more! Keep doing what you’re doing Ruth…love it xxxx

  14. Yes yes yes to talking about everything and nothing. I also find that I sometimes completely forget how to say words and come across a stupid babbling thing that is responsible for the well being of 4 little people. You are not alone x
